COW Gun Mounting
This ground based, weapons mounting, enabled the Coventry Ordnance Works, (COW) Quick Firing, 1½ Pounder gun to engage both air and surface targets.
While the COW gun spent almost 20 years undergoing trials as an air weapon, it’s most widespread use with the RAF was as a ground-based weapon. During the Second World War, COW guns were fitted to Mk III Armadillo armoured fighting vehicles, used for airfield defence. Armadillos were improvised armoured vehicles, based on a variety of flat-bed lorries which had defensive structures, extra armour and a range of weapons added to them.
