RAF Stanley Chapel
In 1983, during the Falklands War, this shipping container was turned into a chapel for use by RAF personnel based at RAF Stanley and remained in use there until 1986.
When the RAF occupied the airfield at Port Stanley in June 1982 all that the padre had for a chapel was a large tent, which was cold and wet in winter. In 1983, an empty steel shipping container was modified by the General Engineering Flight to serve as the station chapel. Fitted out with an altar, altar cross, lectern, lights and a bell, it is a remarkable example of RAF improvisation.
