The Order of St Michael and St George was instituted in 1818 by the Prince Regent, later King George IV, for service overseas.
The appointment of Sir John Salmond to Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George was announced on 4 June 1917 in the Birthday Honours list of King George V.
