George Cross of Flight Sergeant Stanley James Woodbridge
Woodbridge joined the RAF in 1941 and trained as a Wireless Operator. By February 1944, he was a Flight Sergeant having been posted to No. 159 Squadron in India.
On the night of 31 January - 1 February 1945, Woodbridge's Consolidated B-24 Liberators developed engine trouble whilst returning from a bombing mission. The crew baled out and six were able to find each other in the jungle. They were handed over to the Japanese by the local Burmese. The Japanese tortured Woodbridge in an effort to obtain technical information regarding wireless equipment, codes and wave lengths. Woodbridge refused to disclose any information and was beheaded with four of his crew on 7 February 1945. Of the six Japanese torturers, four were executed after being brought to trial and the other two received long sentences of imprisonment with hard labour.
