The Order of the British Empire was established in 1917 to recognise outstanding work in the First World War and is still awarded.
In 1944 Sir Dermot Boyle was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1953 he was advanced to Knight Commander in the 1953 New Year Honours List.
