In August 1915, Rice transferred to the Royal Flying Corps where he served as an observer with No.2 Squadron. He later qualified as a pilot at the Military flying School, Farnborough, in April 1916. Rice returned to the Western Front in late 1916 and joined No.8 Squadron flying artillery spotting and tactical reconnaissance sorties.
