Unofficial observer's flying log book and 'Note Book of Things Aeronautical' of Second Lieutenant Bernard Curtis Rice, 1915-1917
Notebook is in two parts, the first half contains training notes for an observer, the second half is a detailed record of flights undertaken by Rice as an observer on No.2 Squadron and as a pilot and flight commander in No.8 Squadron, 1915-1917
Bernard Rice enlisted into the army four days after the outbreak of war, where he joined the Army Service Corps and served in France as a despatch rider. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps where he served as an observer before retraining as pilot. He returned to the Western Front and joined No.8 Squadron flying artillery spotting and tactical reconnaissance sorties. Curtis returned to the UK in the autumn of 1917 and spent the remainder of the war as an instructor. He was tragically killed in a car crash in August 1933.
