Rolls-Royce Griffon 57A
A 2,500 horsepower inline 12-cylinder aero engine, sectioned and exploded for instructional use; left and right hand tractor drive to contra-rotating props. Electric starter; for use on Avro Shackleton. Modified from 57 to 57A standard.
As used on Shackleton prototype and in the outboard positions on the Shackleton MR.1; 891 built at Derby 1947-53. This engine passed off at RR Derby 13 September 1951 as a Griffon 57 and sometime late (after 23 October 1953) was converted to 57A standard by incorporation of 4 modifications to improve life and reliability. Appears to have been rebuilt from 57 to 57A standard. The basic mark number originally engraved was 57, with an 'A' stamped on later. The original engine serial number and Ministry A number have both been mutilated and are virtually impossible to read. 7557B is stamped on the engine identity plate.
