Royal Air Force Balloon Command, November 1938-June 1945
Ring binder of typescript sheets, photographs and memoirs regarding the history and operations of Balloon Command during the Second World War complied by Flight Lieutenant William Forks.
Balloon Command of the RAF was part of the air defences of the United Kingdom during the Second World War. Barrage balloons were intended to force enemy aircraft to fly higher and thereby reduce the accuracy of their bombing, or if aircraft chose to fly lower there was a risk of hitting a balloon cable and crashing. Barrage balloons were strategically positioned to safeguard key locations, including factories, harbours, and major cities. After 1941 Balloon Command employed significant numbers of women in order to release men for service elsewhere in the RAF.
