Pilot's flying log book of Second Lieutenant Maurice Alfred Kay, 8 September 1916-29 April 1917
Alfred Kay on completing his flying training served as an instructor in the UK before being posted to No.56 Squadron in France in the spring of 1917.
No.56 Squadron had just reequipped with the S.E.5 and were the first unit to operate the aircraft in combat. Kay joined the squadron on 8 April 1917, a period of particularly heavy fighting as the Royal Flying Corps flew in support of the British Army engaged in the Battle of Arras. Casualties were heavy and the period became known as 'Bloody April'. Kay was killed on the last day of April, his aircraft being the first S.E.5 fighter lost in combat.
