Pilot's flying log book of Second Lieutenant Oliver Henry Douglas Vickers, RFC, 1917
After completing his flying training, Second Lieutenant Vickers was posted to No.20 Squadron RFC in France in June 1917.
Flying the Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2d in the fighter-reconnaissance role. Vickers and his observers were to claim 13 combat victories from the end of June to August 1917, qualifying him as an ace. Vickers returned to the United Kingdom in the autumn of 1917 and spent a spell as an instructor. Oliver Vickers was the first son of Douglas Vickers, the chairman of the famous armaments manufacturing company Vickers. Oliver joined the family firm after the war but sadly dies of pneumonia in 1929 aged only 29.
