A yank in the RCAF
This is the memoir of American Major Hubert Knilans of No. 617 Squadron detailing his time in the RCAF. He flew in Operation Taxable, a deception operation leading up to D-Day.
During Operation Taxable, 617 Squadron’s Avro Lancasters flew low over the English Channel on the night of 5/6 June 1944, dropping metallic strips known as ‘window’. These strips created the appearance of multiple targets on radar screens. This tactic diverted German attention, resulting in forces spread across larger areas rather than concentrated at planned Allied landing zones. Pages 136-139 detail Major Knilans’ flights on the night of 5/6 June 1944.
