Schneider Trophy 1931, R.J. Mitchell
When the UK won the Schneider Trophy in 1931 for the third time in a row, those involved received miniature replicas of the trophy. This one was presented to Reginald Mitchell, the aircraft designer. Mitchell would later design the Supermarine Spitfire.
Announced in 1912 to promote the development of aircraft operating from open water, the Schneider Trophy was competed for from 1913-1931. Initially the competition was for practical aircraft, however, after the First World War the trophy became more a speed competition. Any nation that won the trophy three times consecutively would win the trophy outright. Great Britain achieved this feat by winning in 1927, 1929 & 1931.
