Charity football match between French Internationals and RNAS mechanics at Malo-les-Bains, 1916.
Poster advertising a charity football match between mechanics from the Royal Naval Air Service and French internationals at Malo-les-Bains, played Sunday 2 July 1916.
In the modern day, Malo-les-Bains is a seaside resort. It is located on the outskirts of Dunkirk and this is illustrated on the poster with a map in the corner conveying local landmarks, the route to the stadium for the match as well as an indication of the direction Dunkirk is in. During the First World War, Dunkirk's port proved to be important for British forces to bring in dock workers from abroad. Additionally, it faced heavy attack from German forces from 1915, and this led to a significant decrease in the population of the city by 1917.
