Edgar served in the Royal Navy and Royal Naval Air Service before joining the Royal Air Force. He was awarded his gallantry medals for service in the First World War. After the war he served in Iraq and was awarded the Order of the British Empire. He officially retired in 1932 but was appointed Inspector of Recruiting, a vital role for RAF expansion.
