Medal Bar of 6, Squadron Leader Walter Henry Park
Walter Henry Park joined the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War, earning the Military Cross in 1917. His Distinguished Flying Cross was awarded for operations in North Russia in 1919 and the Bar for operations in Kurdistan in 1922.
Park was posted to No. 8 Squadron in Iraq in January 1921. A day bomber unit, they moved to Basra in February 1921 charged with the aerial policing of that area. In July 1922 they moved to Kirkuk to support actions against a Kurdish rebellion. Park was in charge when an evacuation of troops and personnel by air from Sulaymaniyah was required in September. For organising this withdrawal, Park was awarded a Bar to his DFC. His medal bar consists of the Military Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross with Bar, 1914-1915 Star, War Medal 1914-1918, Victory Medal and General Service Medal 1918-1962 with Bar Kurdistan.
