Target map of Berlin, Tempelhof marshalling yard, and Anhalter and Potsdamer stations, target No. 6(d)(vi)70, 1943
This map shows targeting information for RAF Bomber Command crews attacking Berlin ahead of the Battle of Berlin. The British believed heavy, targeted raids - making use of new aircraft like the Lancaster - on Berlin would defeat Germany and end the Second World War.
Berlin was attacked sixteen times between November 1943 and March 1944, but failed in its object of inflicting a decisive defeat on Germany. However, massive damage was done. By December the cumulative effect of the bombing campaign had made more than a quarter of Berlin's living accommodation unusable. The Royal Air Force lost more than 7,000 aircrew and 1,047 bombers during the campaign, with a further 1,682 aircraft damaged or written off.
