Victoria Cross Awarded to Squadron Leader Ian Willoughby Bazalgette, 1945
The Victoria Cross posthumously awarded to Squadron Leader Ian Willoughby Bazalgette for his courage and devotion to duty.
Continuing to fly his Lancaster after being hit by flak and flying on one engine, Ian told his crew to bale out. Two wounded men could not leave. Bazalgette gave up his chance to escape and instead attempted to land the burning aircraft. The Lancaster exploded on landing and all three men were killed.
