RAF air ambulance orderlies flying log book of LACW Lilian F. Eastman, 1944-1945
This is a logbook which belonged to Leading Aircraftwoman Lilian Eastman of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Following D-Day she served as a Nursing Orderly for Allied casualties.
D-Day left thousands of Allied personnel badly injured. These casualties were evacuated far away from the frontline through the Casualty Evacuation Flights (CEF). Douglas Dakotas transported 1097 Stretcher Cases and 467 Sitting Cases, in the first month after D-Day, back home to Britain. The Nursing Orderlies were subsequently referred to as “Flying Nightingales”. The logbook compiled by Eastman records the number of CEFs she undertook while serving in the WAAF
