Supermarine Stranraer 920/CF-BXO

The Stranraer was the final development of the Southampton flying boat to be put into production and was one of the world’s last biplane flying boats. The Museum's example served in Canada during the Second World War.

Operation GRAPPLE Commemorative Beer Mat

Operation GRAPPLE was the codename given to the trials of Britain's first hydrogen bomb. The RAF's No. 49 Squadron was responsible for the air dropping of the weapon. The first trial took place on 15 May 1957, over Malden Island in the Pacific Ocean.

Panavia Tornado F.3

The Tornado F.3 was designed to conduct long-duration combat air patrols. First flown in November 1985, and in training use with No. 229 OCU at Coningsby from July 1986, the Tornado F.3 entered Squadron service with No 29 Squadron, at RAF Coningsby, in April 1987.

Badge worn by Gladys Hilder, the widow of Sgt Charles Hilder, during a visit to the his grave in the Hanover War Cemetery, in the mid 1990s. Sgt Hilder was killed on an operation to bomb Berlin in March 1944, whilst flying in a Lancaster of No.115 Squadron.

Hawker Hurricane Wreck

Hawker Hurricane I P3175 was built by the Gloster Aircraft Company and issued to No. 257 Squadron in August 1940. From 17 August onwards it was flown most often by Pilot Officer Gerard Hamilton Maffett.

Wing Commander Guy Gibson was awarded the Victoria Cross (RAF Museum collection 1990/0609/D) on 28 May 1943 for his outstanding skill, determination and courage demonstrated leading No. 617 Squadron during the iconic Dams raid of 16-17 May 1943.

During the 1990s the RAF would undertake both offensive and peacekeeping role in the Balkans. The Implementation Force (IFOR) was a NATO-led peace-keeping force which operated in the former Yugoslavian provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
