Yellow Sun was the first thermonuclear weapon developed for operational service in the United Kingdom. Yellow Sun Mk1 was essentially a boosted fission weapon with a yield of about 500Kt. Yellow Sun Mk2 had a larger yield of 1Mt. The name referred to the bomb's casing, which could contain various different warheads.

Air Raid Protection First Aid Box

During the Second World War Air Raid Protection (ARP) Wardens kept first aid boxes at their posts to provide immediate medical assistance following an enemy attack. These boxes contained supplies such as bandages and dressings and a first aid handbook.

Distress Flare for Day and Night

This personal distress flare formed part of the emergency kit for downed aircrews to signal for assistance. A red night flare could be activated at one end and a daytime orange smoke signal at the other.

Night Simulation Goggles

It is much safer to practice night flying during the day than in the dark. Wearing these heavily tinted goggles, a pupil can experience the low light levels of night flying while the instructor keeps a good look out.

Flying Boot, RAF, 1941 Pattern

The tendency for the 1940 Pattern Flying boot to fall off when parachuting from an aircraft led to a quick redesign incorporating a leather buckle to the bottom of the near identical 1941 Pattern Boot.

Flying Helmet Type E

Originally issued as a lightweight helmet for the crews of Coastal Command, the Type E later replaced the Type D helmet as the standard headgear for crews operating in tropical areas.
