The Heinkel He 162 was a jet fighter used by the German Luftwaffe in the closing stages of the Second World War. Known as the ‘Volksjager’ (People’s Fighter), it was produced in too few numbers to have any effect on the outcome of the war.

Nagoya Prisoner of War Camp Fan

This fan shows the names of some of the inmates of the Nagoya Prisoner of War camp. Like many camps in Japan the prisoners were treated as slave labour and, in the case of the inmates of camp No. 9, they were forced to work for the Nippon Express Company.

The Bedford OXC tractor was developed with the assistance of Scammell, pioneers in the development of articulated lorries, now used extensively for transporting goods by road. The Bedford was one of two tractors used with an articulated aircraft recovery trailer, commonly known as a Queen Mary (after the ship of the same name).

Avro York Mk I

Manufactured by Avro and incorporating the wings, tail, undercarriage and engines of the Lancaster bomber, the York was to prove a useful military and civilian transport aircraft in war and peace.

22,000lb Grand Slam Bomb

The 22,000lb Grand Slam and the smaller 12,000lb Tallboy were specialist weapons devised by Barnes Wallis. They were designed to penetrate deep into the ground where the explosives created an underground cavern into which the surrounding area, and any nearby structure, would collapse.

V-2 / A4 Rocket

This example of a V-2 supersonic ballistic missile was assembled by the British at the end of the war. Made from captured parts, it was used in research and evaluation work. V-2s were mainly used against targets in Belgium as well as South East England.
