By the Second World War, Lloyd Samuel Bredner (1894-1952) held an illustrious career, having served as a fighter pilot in the First World War with the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in No. 3 (Naval) Squadron, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross for his gallantry, then in the interwar period working as Controller of Civil Aviation in his native Canada. In May 1940 he was appointed to the role of Chief of Air Staff in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in the rank of Air Vice-Marshal.

Michael Ayrton depicted this scene in January 1941, as one of a series of 'Coastal Defences' paintings. Aged 20 and at the beginning of his artistic career, he had yet to establish a reputation for himself and was not on the War Artists’ Advisory Committee’s (WAAC) list of names for consideration as an Official War Artist. In the hope of securing a commission, he speculatively showed his series to the Committee's Chair, Kenneth Clark, at the National Gallery, but was unsuccessful.
