Royal Air Force Prisoners of War Association Memorial Plaque

Created by Michael McHale in conjunction with the Royal Air Force Prisoners of War Association, this plaque commemorates the 50 prisoners of war who were executed after escaping from Stalag Luft III in 1944. A fictionalised account of the mass breakout is told in the 1960s film, ‘The Great Escape’.

Pilot Jimmy James, shot down and captured in the Netherlands in 1940, was a persistent prison escaper, including during the Great Escape of 24 March 1944. He was awarded the Military Cross in recognition of his numerous escape attempts. The medals are, from left to right, Military Cross, 1939-1945 Star, Aircrew Europe Star, 1939-1945 War Medal with Mention in Despatches oakleaf.

Stalag Luft III was a prisoner of war camp which became well known due to the mass escape attempt by prisoners of war in March 1944 and was immortalised in the Paul Brickhill book 'The Great Escape' and the 1963 film of the same name.
