Collection of papers relating to Warrant Officer Michael Joseph Moloney. Warrant Officer Moloney came from the Republic of Ireland. He voluntarily joined the RAF during the Second World War and remained in the RAF until 1963. The collection includes two aircrew flying log books, a warrant certificate and a quantity of photographs.

On 24 June 1948 Soviet forces in the Eastern Zone of Germany stopped all rail and road traffic between the British, United States and French Zones of Berlin and the corresponding Allied Zones in western Germany. The only way for the Allies to maintain a supply and communication route into the closed off zones was via the air.

The Handley Page Hastings replaced the Avro York as the Royal Air Force’s standard long-range transport from 1948. Two squadrons of the new aircraft served alongside the Avro York throughout the Berlin Airlift, flying vital supplies into the city during the Soviet blockade.

The Avro Lancastrian was developed from the Avro Lancaster heavy bomber. It was primarily used as a transport in RAF service. Flight Refuelling Ltd Lancastrians were used during the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49 to ferry fuel into the city.
