Known as Ulrich, Philip Louis Ulric Cross (1917-2013) arrived in Britain from Trinidad and Tobago in November 1941 and trained as a navigator, after which he was commissioned as an officer and assigned to No. 139 (Jamaica) Squadron, based at RAF Marham.

Flight Lieutenant Hendry served as a navigator in the RAF, flying two tours of operations firstly with No. 467 Squadron and then No. 97 Squadron. After the war he remained in the RAF and was instrumental in setting up 'RAF News', the RAF's newspaper which is still published to this day.

Jacob Kramer made this portrait when his Leeds friend Percy Dalton joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve. Following his promotion to Flight Lieutenant, Dalton died when his Wellington bomber was shot down over France in 1942.
