Charles Nicholas was an officer in the South Wales Borderers and saw service at Gallipoli in 1915 where he was wounded. After recovering from his wounds he transferred to the RFC and began pilot training in 1915 at Catterick Bridge.

Lionel West from Handsworth, Birmingham joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. After completing his flying training he was posted to No.2 Aeroplane Supply Depot in August 1918.
