This aircraft was built as a bomber in 1960, but was modified for the reconnaissance role in 1965, before being converted into a tanker in 1978. In this new role, it took part in both the Falklands Conflict and the Gulf War before being retired in 1993.

This detailed preparatory study of Flight Sergeant Alexander Quadling, a Flight Engineer, is one of many large drawings Knight made for the painting ‘Take Off’ (1943, Imperial War Museums), in which she represented a Stirling bomber crew at RAF Mildenhall preparing for flight.

As part of the King George V's Silver Jubilee on 6 July, 1935, the RAF chose RAF Station Mildenhall as one of two venues to host a royal review of the RAF. A third of the RAF's entire strength – 38 squadrons with 370 aircraft – took part in the royal review.
