Charles Nicholas was an officer in the South Wales Borderers and saw service at Gallipoli in 1915 where he was wounded. After recovering from his wounds he transferred to the RFC and began pilot training in 1915 at Catterick Bridge.

Norman Bottomley was commissioned into the East Yorkshire Regiment before transferring to the RFC in late 1915. Bottomley did not fly operationally during the First World War, but after completing his flying training, spent the war instructing both in the UK and in France.
