Charles Nicholas was an officer in the South Wales Borderers and saw service at Gallipoli in 1915 where he was wounded. After recovering from his wounds he transferred to the RFC and began pilot training in 1915 at Catterick Bridge.

Second Lieutenant Beauchamp Proctor was a South African born fighter ace. During his time with No.84 Squadron, he claimed 54 aerial victories all in the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5, making him the highest scoring S.E.5 ace.
