Percival Mew Gull

The Percival Mew Gull was a British racing aircraft of the 1930s, and only six were built. G-AEXF won the King’s Cup with Alex Henshaw in 1938 and they then completed a record-breaking flight from England to South Africa and back in 1939. This replica is modelled on that aircraft.

Faster aircraft speeds made it hard for gunners to control their machine guns. Frazer-Nash produced a hydraulically powered turret which included a shield for the gunner. The ‘lobster back’ turret was fitted to the Hawker Demon fighter.

Knight made these charcoal studies for her painting 'Take Off' (1943, Imperial War Museums), which represents a Stirling bomber crew preparing for flight. Based at RAF Mildenhall with No. 15 Squadron, Knight, who did not accompany the crew in flight, posed the men as if they were about to embark on a raid over Germany.
