Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II

The F-35 Lightning II is a supersonic multirole stealth combat aircraft, and the most modern combat aircraft to be used by the RAF. While primarily built in the United States, the F-35 programme was developed between several different nations and relies on a global supply chain, including components manufactured in the UK.

This report by General Jan Smuts, a prominent South African military leader, was presented on 17 August 1917 to the UK War Cabinet. It recommends the establishment of a separate air service and is seen as the founding document of the Royal Air Force.

This assortment of metal fragments from bombs and anti-aircraft shells, known as shrapnel, was donated to the RAF Museum by Mr Moulden who collected them as a child in 1940 during the Second World War.
