Royal Flying Corps Thigh-Length Boots

Thigh-length sheepskin flying boots – or 'fug boots' – helped to keep First World War pilots and observers warm in aircraft with open cockpits. They were particularly necessary when flying at high altitude.

Uniform Jacket of Baron Dowding of Bentley Priory

Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding was Air Officer Commander-in-Chief of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain. This jacket is typical of those worn by officers in 1940 and bears Sir Hugh Dowding’s medal ribbons, pilot’s brevet and rank tapes. It was bequeathed to the Museum after his death in 1970.

Webbing Equipment Renovator

RAF blue grey webbing belts required regular cleaning, particularly before a parade. The paste in this tin was applied with a scrubbing brush and worked into the fabric of the belt.

Ministry of Aircraft Production Plaque

This plaque was presented to Mrs Willard Kitchen from British Colombia, Canada, to commemorate the purchase of Hurricane Mk IIB ‘Wilmar Vancouver’ which served with Nos. 32 and 615 Squadrons during the Second World War.

Bow Tie, No. 31 Squadron

The No. 31 Squadron crest features the Star of India, a reference to being the first military unit to fly in India. The bow tie features tiny gold stars on a dark green background.
