The British Aerospace Experimental Aircraft Programme (EAP) was an advanced technology demonstrator. Originally a tri-national undertaking, British Aerospace, with help from Italian and German suppliers, completed the project independently after the German and Italian Governments withdrew.

Fairey Delta 2

In the late 1940s Britain was trailing far behind in supersonic aircraft design. To try to retrieve matters the Ministry of Supply issued a specification for a supersonic research aircraft, and Fairey set about meeting this with a delta-winged aircraft designed for investigation into flight and control at transonic and supersonic speeds.

Bristol M.1c

The Bristol M.1C was the first British monoplane of the First World War. However, owing to an institutional distrust of monoplanes in the Royal Flying Corps, only 125 Bristol M.1C airframes were ordered.

Window was the codename for strips of aluminium foil, now more commonly referred to as Chaff, which produced a deceptive echo, similar to that of an aircraft, on enemy radar screens.

250lb Target Indicator (TI) Bomb, Mk 1

Aircraft & Exhibits, Circa 1945, Cosford, Hangar Two, 67/O/488

Target indicator bombs such as this 250lb bomb were used by Pathfinder aircraft such as Mosquitos to mark targets with brightly coloured pyrotechnics. They could be used as waymarkers or as an aiming point for the following aircraft.

After the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, many Polish airmen escaped to Britain. From 1940, Polish squadrons began to be formed within the RAF, playing an active role in the Battle of Britain.

Hawker Hurricane Mark IIc

The Hawker Hurricane Mk I entered service in 1937 as the RAF's first eight-gun monoplane. During the Battle of Britain, Hurricanes shot down approximately 60% of enemy aircraft – more than all the other air and ground defences combined.

Charlotte Annie Day joined the WRAF on 4 November 1918. She died in hospital on 30 November 1918 while undergoing training at the WRAF Depot Blandford, a victim of the 1918/1919 flu epidemic.
