Letter to Mrs Clarke from the Commanding Officer of No. 7 Squadron regarding the loss of Sergeant Leonard Clarke, 16 January 1944

This letter was sent to Leonard Clarke’s wife by Group Captain Kenneth Rampling, the Commanding Officer of No. 7 Squadron. He was himself killed on operations a few weeks later, in March 1944.

Officer’s Cuff Eagle Badge 1918 Pattern

The clenched fist grasping six bolts of lighting is the trade badge of RAF Wireless Operators/telecommunications. The 1920 pattern badge employs a light blue thread on a black Melton patch, worn on the sleeve.

USAAF Type M-1 Flak Vest

During 1942, 70% of USAAF aircrew casualties were due to flak and other low speed projectiles. After flak vests were introduced, fatality rates of bomber crews were reduced by 50% and injuries by 70%.
