This green cylinder contained the Red Snow thermo-nuclear warhead fitted to the Blue Steel standoff missile and provided the weapon with its yield of roughly one megaton.

Hawker-Siddeley Vulcan B.2 XL318

The Vulcan was the second of the Royal Air Force’s ‘V bombers’ and like the Valiant and Victor provided part of Great Britain’s nuclear deterrent force for 15 years until the Royal Navy’s Polaris submarines took over the the deterrence role in 1969.

Bristol Siddeley Stentor Mk. 101

The Stentor powered the Blue Steel stand-off nuclear missile carried by the RAF’s V-bomber force from 1963-1970. It used hydrogen peroxide and kerosene to power the missile to around Mach 3 (around 2,220mph or 3,700km/h).

The Blue Steel nuclear missile, which entered service in 1963, can be seen at the front of this photograph. This image dates from around 1982.
