Parachute Harness, RAF, Chest Type

Complex arrangement of straps comprising a body harness with two lift webs terminating in large snap hooks which are positioned on the chest. The body harness made up of four adjustable straps ending in connectors a seat strap and a loop passing between the legs. Two straps pass over the shoulders and two over the thighs, through the loop, and all four clip into a quick release connector box positioned on the lower chest. The harness is fitted with a back pad for comfort. Two square metal loops attached to the seat strap are fitted for the attachment of a dinghy pack which acts as a cushion.

Dark patinated bronze cross pattée with a semi-circular extension on the upper arm bearing a ring which engages with a V below the suspension bar which is decorated with two sprays of laurel leaves joined by a ribbon. Obverse - a crown with crowned lion above and below a sroll bearing the words FOR VALOUR. The cross edged with a double line border. Reverse - The cross edged with a double line border and a double lined central disc bearing an engraved date 15TH SEPT 1940 . The reverse of the suspension bar engraved 652918 SGT. J. HANNAH. 83 SQ. R.A.F. Ribbon - maroon.
