Flying Helmet

Brown leather helmet lined in chamois and with velvet brow band and chin strap lining. The ear positions pierced with a large hole fitted with a black plastic ring-housing for Gosport tubes. An adjustable elastic tightening strap threaded between the outer layer and the lining passes across the back of the helmet at low ear level. Adjustment is by a tiny hook on right side. Vertical buckled goggles retaining strap centre rear. Chin strap on right engages with leather-covered buckle on left. This example fitted with Gosport tubes. Condition - good, displayable but the foam rubber padding obviously hardened and fragmenting.

Memorial to the 50 PoWs shot after the 'Great Escape' from Stalag Luft III in March 1944. Rectangular memorial plaque with glass fronted deep wooden frame, topped by a brass eagle with outstretched wings. Features Royal Air Force Prisoners of War Association badge at the centre with RAF, Fighter Command and Bomber Command Association badges and RCAF, RAF, RNZAF and RAAF pilot's wings and central plaque inscribed 'Look at this Friend. Take the Freedom they strove to Give You and be in their debt.' Smaller individual name plaques bearing the names of those shot.

Below the eagle the inscription FEDERATION AERONAUTIQUE INTERNATIONALE PRIX HENRY DELAVAULX all of the above in relief. Engraved below that 1938 Ft. Lt. H.A.V. HOGAN RECORD DU MONDE DE DISTANCE EN LIGNE DROITE 10715,448 Km. Reverse - in high relief the bust of the prize giver in left profile with COMTE H. DE LAVAULX below it. Signed by the artist in the top right corner GRUN.
