RFC, Wireless Telephone Type, Ptn 1917
Aircraft & Exhibits, In Storage, 1990/0522/U
Very dark brown leather cap type helmet lined in chamois in the crown and in fur below the eye line including a small peak which is turned down. Around the base of the crown is a black silk adjustable draw string which emerges at centre front and centre rear. Short, vertical goggle retaining strap with press stud (broken) at centre rear. Two angled leather loops on left upper side of crown, possibly to retain the oxygen supply pipe. Large, circular telephone holders opening by means of lacing, cover single, large round holes in the sides of the helmet, the holes having chamois leather inter-linings and elasticated apertures giving directly onto the ears. The elastic pierced with a draw string to close it over the earphone. Short leather chin strap on right engages with leather covered buckle on left. The strap has an enlarged, fur lined centre piece bearing two male press studs on its outer, upper edge and a vertical leather loop on its lower edge. Fixed to the helmet at either side is a strap which passes over the crown through loops and down over the earphone pockets and through the loop on the chin strap centre piece to fasten with a buckle. The strap has a buckle at the top of the crown also and is therefore capable of being tightened both upwards and downwards in relation to the fixed points where it is sewn to the sides of the helmet. The purpose of the strap is evidently to clamp the earphones against the wearer's ears. A pierced flap fitted with a shoe lace appears on the right side of the face aperture and an angled buckle on the left. These attachment are assumed to be for the rigging of the oxygen mask which also fastens with female press studs to the male studs on the chin strap centre piece. Oxygen mask not present. Condition - displayable, fur slightly missing but good.
