Group of airmen with 109 Squadron De Havilland Mosquito B IV DZ319 which features an extensive bomb log, circa 1944
The De Havilland Mosquito was one of the truly outstanding aircraft to emerge during the Second World War. Combining speed, long range and the ability to operate at high altitudes, the Mosquito excelled in the photo reconnaissance, bomber, night fighter and fighter-bomber roles.
Within Bomber Command, the Mosquito was initially used as a light, day bomber within 2 Group. It soon found a niche as a target marking aircraft with the Pathfinder Force of 8 Group and as a nuisance raider with the Light Night Striking Force. Mosquito B.IV DZ319 (HS-S) of No 109 Squadron was fitted with the blind bombing device OBOE and operated in the target marking role. It is pictured here shortly after completing its 101st operational sortie.
