Buckingham Palace condolence letter to Mrs Albon
During the Second World War a standardised condolence letter with facsimile signature of King George VI was sent on behalf of the Royal Family to the families of members of HM Armed Forces who died during their service. This one was sent to the wife of Flying Officer Eric Albon.
Flying Officer Eric Albon was a bomb aimer with No. 78 Squadron on Halifaxes. He failed to return from an operation to Amiens in which he was flying in Halifax LV820 on 12 June 1944. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, alongside over 12,000 other Bomber Command aircrew who also remain missing in action.
