Wing Commander Guy Gibson was awarded the Victoria Cross (RAF Museum collection 1990/0609/D) on 28 May 1943 for his outstanding skill, determination and courage demonstrated leading No. 617 Squadron during the iconic Dams raid of 16-17 May 1943.
Guy Gibson formed and led No. 617 Squadron on their first operation over Germany, Operation Chastise, the famous Dams raid of 16-17 May 1943. He completed two tours with Bomber Command and also flew as tour as a night fighter pilot. He had flown an astonishing 177 before he was killed in action in September 1944. Gibson's medal bar includes the Victoria Cross replica (original VC is separate to this medal bar), Distinguished Service Order and Bar, Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar, 1939–45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star with 'France and Germany' clasp, and the War Medal 1939–1945.
