Military Medal of Sergeant Helen Emily Turner

Helen Turner served as a switchboard operator at the busy RAF station at Biggin Hill, as a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. On 30 August 1940, during an air raid, she kept on working in order to maintain vital telephone contact with Group Headquarters. She and colleague Corporal Elizabeth Henderson only left when a 500lb bomb crashed through the roof and the building caught fire.

Balloons were an important deterrent to low-level attack, usually sited on the approach to important targets. If an aircraft hit the balloon's cable, it would then be cut by explosive links, which in turn activated two parachutes. These would rapidly slow the aircraft, forcing it to stall and crash.

Canopy rail from a P-51 Mustang flown by Captain Howard ‘Pete’ Wiggins, who joined the USAAF in 1942. As part of the US Army 8th Air Force, Howard Wiggins flew fighter aircraft such as P-51 Mustangs and P-47 Thunderbolts on bomber escort missions from bases in the UK.

The Heinkel He 162 was a jet fighter used by the German Luftwaffe in the closing stages of the Second World War. Known as the ‘Volksjager’ (People’s Fighter), it was produced in too few numbers to have any effect on the outcome of the war.
