This is a rare scene of refugees from the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) who remained living in London during the Blitz. Reliant on charities, they were shockingly neglected and received no financial assistance from the Government or local authorities.

In 1929 Lehmann was awarded a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art whose curriculum focused on studying the human figure. She made her career as a painter, muralist, illustrator and designer for magazines and of cards and wallpaper. Her broad repertoire ensured she received steady creative work during the war.

Edith Honor Earl made this portrait for her exhibition 'Warriors of the Empire' with the Royal Empire Society, which opened in London's Grosvenor House in December 1944. It is one of 22 portraits by her in the RAF Museum collection (besides others elsewhere) which celebrate the contributions of Service personnel from the British colonies and Commonwealth in the Second World War.
