Boulton Paul Defiant Mark I

The Defiant introduced a new tactical concept in two-seat RAF fighter design by concentrating all armament in a four-gun turret behind the cockpit. During the Battle of Britain, it proved no match for German fighters and was quickly withdrawn from daylight operations and moved to a night-fighter role.

Sector Room Clock (Replica)

Aircraft & Exhibits, Cosford, Hangar Two, 79/I/1326

These clocks were used in Operation Rooms in the Second World War, and particularly during the Battle of Britain, to help track the movements of incoming formations of enemy aircraft.

Princess Mary's RAF Nursing Service Service Dress Hat

The RAF Nursing Service adopted a distinctive four-cornered black felt hat in September 1918. It continues to be used as part of the Officer's Service Dress for the Princess Mary's RAF Nursing Service.

Unofficial No. 23 Squadron Badge

This illustration of an eagle preying on a falcon is No. 23 Squadron's crest, and the Latin motto 'Semper aggressus' means 'Always having attacked'.

Gloves of an Officer

With the adoption of the blue grey uniform in 1919 the colour of the Service Dress gloves remained brown as a reminder of the RAF's origins with the Royal Flying Corps.

Medal Bar of Flight Lieutenant William Gethin Owen

William Owen served as an Observer with No. 235 Squadron during the Battle of Britain, flying in Bristol Blenheim fighters that provided convoy protection, fighter patrols and anti-shipping patrols over the English Channel and North Sea.

This Avro Lancaster is a rare survivor of the Second World War and among the most significant aircraft in the RAF Museum’s collection. On average, a Lancaster’s life expectancy was 21 operational sorties, yet this Lancaster flew a total of 137.
