Augsburg Raid, April 17 1942 by Paul Nash, watercolour and gouache on paper

Famed for his First World War works, in 1940 Nash was invited again to become an Official War Artist for the revived scheme chaired by Sir Kenneth Clark. When Clark’s War Artists’ Advisory Committee assigned him to the Air Ministry Nash made propagandist watercolours of RAF and Luftwaffe aircraft.

This pastel portrait is one of many made by Eric Kennington during his two-year full-time Official War Artist commission with the Air Ministry through the War Artists' Advisory Committee. A renowned portraitist, he was tasked with portraying high-ranking men in the RAF.

Jacob Kramer made this portrait when his Leeds friend Percy Dalton joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve. Following his promotion to Flight Lieutenant, Dalton died when his Wellington bomber was shot down over France in 1942.

No. 19 Air Flight over Wytschaete by Paul Nash, watercolour, gouache and chalk on paper

From February 1917, Nash served with the Hampshire Regiment in the trenches of Flanders, on the Western Front. This is one of 50 drawings he made of the Ypres Salient battlefields that November, when he returned to the Front after injury, now serving as an Official War Artist.

Royal Observer Corps, Rottingdean by Roland Vivian Pitchforth, watercolour on paper

As an Official War Artist, Roland Vivian Pitchforth undertook many commissions through the War Artists' Advisory Committee during the Second World War. This watercolour shows a Royal Observer Corps observation post. It was commissioned by the Admiralty as part of a series representing naval vessels and subjects related to maritime warfare around the British coastline.

Studies of Contrails by Rudolf Sauter, watercolour and chalk on paper

These four studies of aircraft contrails come from a body of drawings of the subject which Rudolf Sauter made in October 1940 during the Battle of Britain. Later, he also depicted iridescent watercolours of Fighter Command aircraft flying at dawn.
