By the Second World War, Lloyd Samuel Bredner (1894-1952) held an illustrious career, having served as a fighter pilot in the First World War with the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in No. 3 (Naval) Squadron, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross for his gallantry, then in the interwar period working as Controller of Civil Aviation in his native Canada. In May 1940 he was appointed to the role of Chief of Air Staff in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in the rank of Air Vice-Marshal.
