Aircraft & Exhibits, In Storage, 65/U/821
Brown leather cap type helmet lined in khaki silk in the crown and in brown cotton below the crown. The helmet seems originally to have been made without flaps or apertures, but smallish, round holes have been cut in line with the ears and small leather flaps, formed into an open tube at the rear, have been crudely sewn over them, possibly to accommodate hearing tubes. The cap fastens by lengths of tape, both of which appear to be in Service replacements - right plain cotton tape, left a piece of flat black boot lace. The silk lining inked with messages - "Joined RFC 19/8/14", "Not to begger Begged borrowed or stolen", "Wireless sent from Morane 23/3/15", "Put it down it's not yours", "Cross Channel Sept 25th 1914", "July 15/15 under shell fire in Morane 1862 (illegible) 000 ft up 1 hit", "Shot at German aircraft July 17/15", "Dropped bomb July 18/15", "G.N. Wilton 5 Narbonne Ave Clapham Common". Condition - good and supple, the surface of the leather on the crown scuffed. The silk lining separating round the edges. Displayable but not on a figure. If displayed try to place over a mirror so that the inside can be read.

Aircraft & Exhibits, In Storage, 69/U/229
Brown leather cap type helmet lined in green silk in the crown and in leather below the crown. No ear flaps and large semi-circular apertures cut in the sides of the helmet to allow the wearer's ears to protrude. In front of these apertures at top and bottom a female press stud to allow the attachment of separate wind deflectors, the right one of which is present. Broad leather chin strap with three female press studs on left to engage with three male press studs on right. Condition - good and supple, the surface of the leather on the crown scuffed and nicked to show a white underlayer. One of the press studs above the left aperture has the broken off stub of the male press stud from the missing wind deflector still in it. Displayable but not on a figure due to missing piece.

Aircraft & Exhibits, In Storage, 85/U/795
Very dark brown, possibly black, leather cap type helmet lined in chamois in the crown and in black fur below the eye line including the turned-up peak. Long ear flaps fitted with two press studs which enable them to be fastened back to cover single, 3/4 inch round holes in sides of helmet, or to be rolled forward to become wind deflectors leaving the holes clear. Short leather chin strap on right with broad, fur lined section in centre under chin. The end pierced for buckling has broken off and been replaced with a loop of strong twine to engage with a pin buckle on left. Large silk label, perished and illegible, in crown. Condition - Fair, displayable but much dressed with grease which has lead to severe verdigris formation on press studs.
RFC, Private Purchase

Chin strap sewn inside the face aperture and positioned vertically on right engages with very small slot buckle inside left side; a very difficult, inconvenient fastening arrangement. Condion - worn but stable and displayable.
