Envelope labelled "Mr Chew - just a personal and private matter between men"
The text "Mr Chew - just a personal and private matter" is typed while the words "between men" are handwritten in ink. The envelope was labelled by Mr Horrocks for the attention of Mr Chew so as not to upset Mrs Chew.
Samuel Chew's son FS Alan David Chew was a Navigator on Avro Lancaster I PD252, which failed to return on the night of 12/13 August 1944. Mr Chew exchanged letters with the father of the Air Gunner, Sgt Horrocks, as they sought to discover its fate. This envelope marked "just a personal and private matter between men", contains a letter from Mr Horrocks. The aircraft had been hit and had exploded, killing their sons instantly.
