Two years after the RAF Museum opened to visitors, it commissioned Bryan Organ, known for his depictions of famous people, to paint a ‘portrait’ of the Hawker Siddeley Harrier aircraft. Several years later, he also drew the Museum’s founding Director, Dr John Tanner.

Christmas card from 26 Squadron, RFC, serving in East Africa, 1917

Christmas has been and continues to be marked by RAF stations and squadrons. This particular Christmas Card is significant as it was designed by 26 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps - the RAF's predecessor - while they were stationed in East Africa during the First World War.

This photograph is from the last major British peacetime exercise held by the RAF. Between 8 and 11 August 1939 over 1,300 aircraft had taken part in drills in the skies of south-east England. At the end of the exercise a civilian ‘blackout’ had been ordered.

Airspeed Oxford Mk. I MP425

The Airspeed Oxford was the Royal Air Force’s first twin-engine monoplane advanced trainer. It entered service with the Central Flying School in November 1937.

Avro Lincoln Mk II

This aircraft was built at Baginton, Conventry, at the end of the Second World War. It served with the Bomber Command Bombing School until September 1960. It then carried out electronic warfare and countermeasures trials and training with the Central Signals Establishment until March 1963 – and was one of the last Lincolns to be operated by the RAF.

Mitsubishi Ki-46 'Dinah'

This Ki-46 was captured by the British in Malaya at the end of the War. It was assessed by the Allied Technical Air Intelligence Unit, South East Asia (ATAIU SEA), before coming to the UK as a museum object.
